1001 Rules for My Sister at College

1001 Rules for My Sister at College A primer for my eldest sibling, that she may find shore in an ocean of dorm showers, popped collars, all-nighters and beer bongs.

Rule No. 47: Learn How to Beat the Apartment Complex

Sub-rules:

1. Keep copies of everything. Leases, attachments, emails, gum wrappers. EVERYTHING!

2.Always read your lease and know exactly what it says before you sign it.

3. Before you move one piece of furniture into the apartment. Fill out the checklist that says what was dirty or damaged when you moved in (carpet stains, holes in the wall, etc.) and take it straight to the office and get the name of the person you handed it to.

4. Clean the apartment thoroughly before moving out and take pictures when you’re done.

5. Demand your entire deposit back. Do not waiver from this demand. Apartment complexes are like terrorists. You cannot negotiate with them, and if you show weakness they will destroy you.
